Faiths Rd Show Press Release

For the first time in its history, Southwell Minster is hosting a Faiths Road Show on Thursday March 19th, from 10 – 2.30pm.

Five schools from around the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham have been invited to participate in this special event based in the Cathedral and Archbishop’s Palace.

Pupils from Sturton le Steeple, Sutton cum Lound, St Anne’s Worksop, St Wilfrid’s Calverton and St Peter’s Mansfield will experience different aspects of world culture and faith, delivered by St Philip’s Centre, a charity set up in 2006 rooted in the multi-faith environment of Leicester, in conjunction with Diocesan and Minster education teams.

St Philip’s aim to provide positive community relations through education, training and engagement. The Centre specialises in providing religion and belief training to public sector organisations, runs certified leadership programmes for young people, charitable activities and organises community events. The Centre and its staff have received a number of honours and awards in recognition of work to build and sustain good inter-faith relations. They work closely with local authorities, police and schools and colleges, and are also actively involved in local, national and international inter faith initiatives. St Philip’s works at a national level with the Department for Communities and Local Government, Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Home Office.

Riaz Ravat, Interim Director of the Centre, says: “Our Religion & Belief Road Show powerfully demonstrates the collective values of respect, acceptance and understanding which are vital ingredients for British society. Our event is creative and innovative. It combines face-to-face learning with interaction through the use of artefacts, quizzes, instruments and food. The Road Show brings to light the different world perspectives which enable schoolchildren to develop their critical thinking skills. I am delighted that the Nottinghamshire schools involved in the Road Show have taken this initiative with the support of the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham and Southwell Minster.”
