Former Minster scholars perform at unique organ recitals

To celebrate 27 years as Cathedral Organist & Rector Chori, Paul Hale has invited a selection of the UK’s top players – all of whom spent time at the Minster - to perform at the 2016 series of Minster Organ Recitals.

Paul says: “There is a heady mix of former choristers, organ scholars and assistant organists, guaranteeing a rich and varied feast of organ music throughout the series – from players who really understand the Minster’s two magnificent organs.”

Monday Bank Holiday recitals in the Nave are given by former Assistant Organist Simon Bell (28 March), former Organ Scholars Peter Holder (2 May) and Stephen Moore (30 May), and by Paul Hale himself, on his final day at the Minster – 29 August. Simon Bell left Southwell for Winchester Cathedral and is now at Tewkesbury Abbey and Dean Close School; Peter Holder is now Assistant Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral, and Stephen Moore, who left here to be organ scholar of Salisbury Cathedral, is now director of music at St Matthew’s church, Northampton.

The Wednesday evening recitals in the Quire kick off with former Chorister and first Southwell Organ Scholar Charles Harrison (22 June), continue with Paul Hale (20 July), then former Chorister Geoffrey Woollatt (17 August), concluding with current Assistant Director of Music Simon Hogan (21 September). Charles Harrison has had a starry career to date, with cathedral posts in Carlisle and Lincoln, now being Director of Music at Chichester Cathedral; Geoffrey Woollatt left us for Chetham’s School and has had cathedral posts in Glasgow and Chester, now being Assistant Director of Music at Manchester Cathedral. Simon and Paul are too well-known to need an introduction.

“We hope for large and enthusiastic audiences at all these recitals – it is a series not likely to be repeated for another quarter century, so do come along!” adds Paul.
