Girls' Choir

Mothering Sunday will be an extra special occasion this year in the Minster. The service on Sunday 15th March at 3.30pm will be sung by the Girls' Choir, in celebration of their 10thanniversary.

It will be a normal Choral Evensong, but with a sermon by the acting Dean, Canon Nigel Coates and a reception afterwards. The cathedral’s Assistant Director of Music, Simon Hogan, says: “We hope that former members of the Girls Choir would like to join us and the Lay Clerks for this special celebration, and a number of former directors are attending including the choir's first director, Simon Bell.”
Southwell Minster Girls' Choir was formed in 2005 and is directed by Simon Hogan. Members are drawn exclusively from the Minster School, and the girls range in age from eleven to eighteen. Girls can join at any age once at the school, but usually begin at year 7 and progress through to year 13.
Ends.

Notes for editors:
The choir sings Evensong on Mondays, and occasionally at the Family Eucharist on Sunday mornings. The girls perform a wide repertoire of choral music, ranging from the 11th Century to works composed specifically for the Girls' Choir, via some lighter pieces such as Chilcott's Little Jazz Mass. The girls also regularly sing with the Cathedral's Lay Clerks, and occasionally with the Cathedral Choristers. In recent years the choir has released a recording, toured to Norway and Holland, sung in Coventry , Derby and Lincoln Cathedrals, and enjoyed workshops with Eamonn Dougan (associate conductor of The Sixteen) and Hilary Jones (nationally-renowned singing teacher).
In addition to the weekly routine of services, the girls are involved in extra events. Recent performances have included a sell-out performance of Britten's Ceremony of Carols with local harpist Roisin Hickey (which was recorded for broadcast on Notts TV), special services for the incoming and outgoing Lords-Lieutenant, and the annual Four Cathedrals Girls' Choirs festival in Derby Cathedral. Future projects include performing in the inaugural Eastern Three Choirs' Festival in Lincoln Cathedral.
