Minster memorial to sacrifice of war offers hope for the future

A unique memorial to the sacrifice of members of Southwell Diocese in war, from the outbreak of World War 1 to the present day, has been installed in Southwell Minster, and will be dedicated at a special service on Sunday 10th July.

The Window and Plaque were commissioned in 2014 by the then Dean of Southwell and the Cathedral Chapter, in conjunction with the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace and Vice Lord- Lieutenant, Colonel Tim Richmond who, on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Lieutenancy, undertook the fundraising needed. This has come in the main from private benefactors, with additional support from regimental associations and Royal British Legion branches.

Nicholas Mynheer, a fine artist, was selected from twelve possible contenders. His vivid and moving tribute to selfless sacrifice, both by those who went to war, and those left to care for families and maintain life at home, can now be seen in the quire of the Minster.

A hundred years since the start of the war, the design seeks to reflect the need for forgiveness and reconciliation, giving glimpses of combatants from both sides seeking common ground between them. Whilst it does not flinch from the terrible truth of war it equally offers hope for the future.

Oxford based Nicholas, whose work had been described as ‘rigorous simplicity in stone, oil or glass’ says: “It acknowledges the darkness of despair and loss, as well as – for many – the loss of faith but it hints ultimately that it is through selfless sacrifice and service to others that the darkness of despair is turned into the Light of Hope.”
