Architectural History

A building of considerable charm, cosiness and immense character the Castle is Scottish Baronial Grade A listed. It was first a mansion house in 1626 and later extended in 1903 with an Arts and Craft wing (C19th movement). It is the only habitable castle on Loch Ness and underwent a £10 million development in 2009 including 57 rooms and 2000 works of art. It features 13 en suite bedrooms, 2 floors, dining room, library, drawing room, main hall, billiard room, modern working kitchens, wine cellar, re-designed servants and children’s quarters, pantry, boot store and lobby. It is medieval in appearance (complete with towers, turrets and large castle doors). Its style is Gothic revival / Victorian and it has a complicated roof structure with numerous turrets, a balustrade balcony with views over Loch Ness.

Architectural Features

The medieval style ‘fairytale’Castle is pale cream / terracotta coloured. The faux medieval façade and dozens of turrets with grey slate tiling gives an even more authentic appearance. The roof profile is complex with the many turrets and levels. From a distance the condition of the building is seamless against the dark green and wild backdrop of thousands of tall trees and the Highlands beyond. Inside, the interior is very well maintained from paintwork, woodwork, wallpaper, and flooring to the ornaments, features and paintings. The interior main hall is a light room with pale walls and the library and drawing room are ruby rich reds, golds, greens and browns. The bedrooms are a mix of fabrics, themes and colours with a hint of Scottish style. The Castle features many characterful attributes such as numerous spiral staircases with rope in place of bannisters, a shower inside a turret, a vestibule and an oratory. The Arts & Craft wing is sufficiently adorned with paintings and wall murals. The windows are in character with the property and each has a magnificent view of Loch Ness, the Estate’s 500 acre parkland, formal gardens or the Scottish Highlands.

Filming Attributes

Aldourie Castle is unique not only in its architecture and proximity to its natural surroundings but also in its convenience as a location venue. The Estate is located just off the main road that leads to the closest town of Inverness. It is a flat route and once accessed through the main gates the journey is a ¼ mile along a tarmacked drive that leads directly to the castle with ample space to park in a flat gravel courtyard. Aldourie is secure and has complete privacy once through the gates. Privacy is continued inside the property with 13 bedrooms on various floors and a quiet library where both actors and crew can easily escape to for privacy, planning, learning lines and rest. The bedrooms are availablef or overnight accommodation in addition to the cottage accommodation. There is free wi-fi throughout the Castle and our small but friendly team of staff can be on hand to help when needed but likewise will stay unobtrusive throughout the filming. The Castle receives lots of natural daylight through ample windows (most of the staterooms and bedrooms have at least two windows). The outside of the castle is surrounded by a large gravel area to the front and side, suitable for parking and equipment set up. Further afield is woodland with access to the Loch, the marina, formal garden and a 150 year old arboretum. There are four holiday cottages on the Estate and the whole area is brimming with wildlife including deer and a variety of birds. The Estate allows hot works, animals and night shoots and can cope with heavy plant machinery.
