Architectural History

Berkhamsted School was founded in 1541 and its five schools – Pre-Prep, Prep, Girls, Boys and Sixth – are based across four campuses in and around the historic and picturesque market town of Berkhamsted. The School offers a mix of buildings of historical significance – a 16th century School Hall, a 19th century chapel and a boarding house that was the birthplace of author Graham Greene – along with modern facilities such as a 500-seat fully equipped theatre and a stunning art and design centre. Beyond the school campuses, the School has 50 acres of playing fields, two boarding houses that offer high quality residential accommodation and a modern sports centre with a 25m six lane indoor swimming pool and large sports hall.

Architectural Features

Pre-Prep Campus - offers a Georgian Walled garden and wooded area in a rural setting; modern sports hall. Prep Campus – from Autumn 2013 there will be a small amphitheatre in the grounds of the school. Castle Campus - Chapel dating back to 19th century ; Grass Quad –an Oxbridge type quad with a cloistered area; Old Hall – a medieval building dating back to the 1540s; Deans’ Hall with a traditional wooden floor, vaulted ceilings and stained glass window; Fives courts; Stream running through arts and design centre. Kings Campus – Nash-Harris building, added in 2011 which includes a ‘floating’ Chapel; Centenary Theatre (500 seat fully equipped theatre); Grass Quad area.

Filming Attributes

Berkhamsted School, located in the historic market town of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, with convenient access to London (30 minutes by train) and Heathrow Airport (a 40 minute drive). The school can also offer modern boarding facilities during the school holidays. The campuses are all set within a 5 min walk around the town with the exception of the Pre-Prep, which is on the outskirts and a 5 min drive.
During the school holidays there is plenty of access to all sites and facilities. Night filming within the school grounds is possible due to its private location. There are a number of different terrains available across the different sites. Some sites could accommodate animals or machinery and this would need to be referred to the Operations Manager with specific details.

Topography

50 acres of playing fields: Chesham Fields – including a pavilion, Kitchener’s Fields & Haslam Playing Fields. Across the campuses there are large grass areas; fields, concrete, tarmac, other hard surfaces, small stream; woods, car parks, external lighting, nearby airfields, landing area for helicopters (by prior approval on school fields), access to major (M25/M1) and access minor road (A41 through to country roads) networks, easy access to Heathrow & Luton airports and towns (Berkhamsted; Watford; Hemel Hempstead; Amersham; Chesham). Surrounding area includes beautiful countryside; historic market towns; Berkhamsted Castle ruins.
