“ With over 35 years experience of hospitality we understand our clients' needs. You can count on a discrete, professional and friendly approach to your work. Since it is a private residence, the Hall is relatively unknown compared to other high profile estates, yet the characteristics and features are well known in architectural and heritage circles. ”

Imogen & D'Arcy Wyvill

Architectural History

Designed by John Carr for Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, and completed in 1768, it is widely recognised as one of the finest medium-sized English houses. Home to the Wyvills for over four and a half centuries, the name of the house derives from their position as Constables of nearby Richmond Castle. The original Elizabethan house is recorded in an early 18th century Kip engraving which shows it built in a fashionable H–plan. In 1754, Sir Marmaduke Wyvill improved the house according to the designs of John Carr of York. The 7th Baronet Sir Marmaduke left the alterations and £1,500 to Carr and made his way to Scotland. He returned, full of expectation, only to find that the majestic family home had disappeared, except for its lowest walls. Mistakenly, Carr’s workmen had pulled down the original house, misinterpreting his instructions to demolish just part of it to facilitate the alterations. It is possible that Carr rebuilt the house on the original Elizabethan foundations, perhaps incorporating the walls. It is also thought that Carr’s distinctive portico-in-antis could be an infilling of the original H.

Architectural Features

Entirely faced in smooth Ashlar stone, Constable Burton Hall is reminiscent of Andrea Palladio’s Villa Emo, in the village of Fanzolo di Vedelago, near Venice. Both houses feature an almost identical recessed portico with giant, unfluted Ionic columns – a rarity in England. The front elevation has the typical 1-3-1 window grouping of Palladio’s villas with a tall piano nobile and lower basement and attic. The lower floor windows have Gibbs surroundings and, at the front, the staircase makes a charming leap across space akin to a bridge. The interior of the Hall is beautifully proportioned, with stunning plaster ceilings (in the style of Adam) and fine marble chimney pieces. The inner hall has a magnificent cantilevered staircase and retained original paint colours and features in the principal rooms.

The Hall has has high speed broadband, WIFI and strong mobile reception throughout. There is a generous supply of power sockets hence local power can be used on request. Use of hotworks is allowed by arrangement. There is ample space in the Parkland for a Unit Base and night time and weekend shoots are available. The owners have a very flexible and proactive approach to filming at the property. They are happy to accommodate and cater for production teams on site.
